All teachers at Maroochydore Yoga Centre are fully qualified by the BKS Iyengar Yoga Association of Australia. Iyengar teachers must undergo a minimum of 5 years study, practice, rigorous training and assessment before receiving teaching qualifications.  All of our teachers maintain a personal practice as well as ongoing study and professional development. The use of the certification mark (see below photos) by accredited Iyengar Yoga teachers demonstrates the teacher’s authenticity and commitment to the Iyengar system of yoga. It is an international symbol of the highest standards of excellence in training and continuing education in the Iyengar method. Only certified Iyengar Yoga teachers are entitled to use the name and certification mark of BKS Iyengar. The certification mark is your assurance of quality in teaching.

Heather Kitchen

Heather began teaching yoga in 1997 under the wings of Eugenie Knox at The Dance of Life in Collingwood, Melbourne. Her drive to learn more drew her further into learning the Iyengar method and after a 3 month teacher training intensive in Cairns with Nicky Knoff (1998) she then took on a 2 year apprenticeship with Frank Jesse at Clifton Hill Yoga Studio, Melbourne (1999 - 2001). Having taught at the Clifton Hill Yoga Studio for 4 years Heather went on to co-found the Yarraville Yoga Centre (2003) in Melbourne's inner west which became one of Australia's largest and busiest yoga studios. Heather relocated to the Sunshine Coast with her family in 2014 and established the Maroochydore Yoga Centre in January 2018.

Over the years Heather has studied with, and been greatly influenced by a number of senior Iyengar Yoga teachers within Australia and has twice attended the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute in India. She continues her professional development with Mark Gibson at Doutta Gala Yoga Studio in Melbourne.

The philosophy of yoga is central to Heather’s practice and teaching, without which she believes we’re simply doing a “workout” for the body. Her primary motivation is to encourage others to connect with their capacity for mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing through the path of yoga, thus creating a sense of wholeness.

Heather is a certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher at Intermediate Junior Level 2, a registered senior teacher with Yoga Australia and the founder and director of Maroochydore Yoga Centre. She has extensive experience teaching all levels of ability, including prenatal yoga.
