New Moon
Restorative and Pranayama Workshop

Around the time of the New Moon our energy can wane and we may feel like turning inward. This is a suitable time for introspection and the practice of deeply restorative yoga.  This nourishing workshop is the perfect opportunity to rest your body and refresh your mind.

These workshops are held in Heather's home studio, Coolum Beach, 3 - 5 PM, on the Saturday afternoon closest to the New Moon.

Inversions Workshop

Inversions are considered a mainstay in Iyengar Yoga and they are introduced very early to beginners, usually in the form of a shoulder-stand or some variation thereof including simply lying with the legs up the wall. There are numerous reasons inversions are of benefit to us, not least of which is the "restorative" effect. Due to the increase in blood pressure when tipping the head lower than the heart, the baroreceptors in the neck send a message to the brain to slow the heart rate down, thus reducing blood pressure along with slowing the breath rate and even slowing the brain waves. Hence, even though we might be actively engaged in order to sustain an inverted pose such as a headstand, our minds can become very quiet and our energy restored.

Other benefits include enhancing proprioception and balance, lifting the mood, strengthening the body (including the core and the arms), reducing fluid retention, stimulating the pituitary, pineal and thyroid glands, enhancing willpower and encouraging a "can-do" attitude bringing feelings of empowerment and exhilaration.

Winter Warming Workshop

This workshop is perfect if you need motivation to stay active and warm in the coming winter months. With a focus on salutes to the sun and backbends you will appreciate the inner glow that radiates from within as a result.

Salutes to the sun - or Surya Namaskar as they are known in the traditional Sanskrit terminology - are the perfect practice to bring warmth to the body. There are numerous ways to practice Surya Namaskar; some versions can be quite dynamic involving jumping, while other versions can be quite slow and meditative and involve stepping instead of jumping. Any variation can lead one into a steady mind state as we synchronise the movement of the body with the breath, extend and flex the spine, all whilst challenge the strength and flexibility of the entire body.

Backbends are powerful postures and are known to be transformative, heating and invigorating. They elicit the fire element and they offer purification and mental clarity. There are numerous backbends we can practice including many supported variations for those who feel they haven't got the strength or mobility to access or maintain some of the stronger poses.
